A great natural remedy to treat the common cold

A great natural remedy to treat the common cold

  • 1 A great way to treat the common cold is with an onion

Thanks to modern science we know that onions have antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties among other powerful compounds that help prevent many diseases in the body. The following recipe is a safe and sure way to nip that cold in the bud. Children and pregnant women can take it.

  • 2 Half a glass of drinking water

Fill half a glass with room temperature drinking water.

  • 3 Onion

Take a white onion (Allium Cepa), peel the outer layer and discard. Cut into chunks. Place chunks in the glass with water until water is barely covering the onion chunks. Wrap any leftover onion in aluminum foil or put in a plastic container and store in the refrigerator for later use in a meal.

  • 4 Preparation time

Cover the glass with a small plate or cover so no bugs or dirt falls in. Let the glass sit at room temperature for 24 hours. After 24 hours have passed you will notice that the once clear drinking water has a milky white consistency. That is because the onion’s properties have been leached into the water.

  • 5 Separate

Separate the onion infused water from the onion chunks. You can use a coffee strainer or mesh strainer, the important thing to bear in mind is that you remove all onion chunks from the water, because if any pieces remain it will sour the infusion and reduce its shelf life.

  • 6 Storage

Pour the onion infused water in a sterile glass jar with a tightly fitting lid or bottle with dropper cap. It must be stored in the refrigerator and will keep for 2 weeks. A good trick to have some ready made is to freeze it and when the cold comes around let it thaw naturally. Never heat it or warm it up!

  • 7 Labeling

Label jar or bottle with the name, elaboration and expiration date. For example: Onion Cold Medicine / Elaborated: 7th of June 2015 / Expiration Date: 21st of June 2015

  • 8 Dosage

Now that you have properly infused onion water you should take 1 to 2 mL from 3 to 4 times a day. If you have the bottle with dropper cap, this means to take 1 to 2 full droppers. If you don’t have a dropper, you can either use ¼ or ½ teaspoon; or a syringe without the needle in order to measure the millilitres.

  • 9 Best way to ingest the remedy

The best way to take this natural remedy is to tilt your head back and pour the recommended dosage directly to the back of your throat (this is why the syringe without a needle is so practical if you don’t have a dropper).

  • 10 Other helpful tips to treat a cold

In addition to taking the aforementioned Onion Cold Medicine, other actions that greatly help your body to recover from a cold are:

  • 11 Rest

Don’t overwork yourself and don’t exercise, simply rest. Your body needs to focus all of its attention on attacking the invading bacteria. If you are busy working hard or exercising you are taking away precious energy from your body in order to do its job correctly in protecting itself.

  • 12 Drink plenty of liquids

Your body is made up primarily of water and when you are sick it begins to work very hard attacking the invading bacteria. The body’s usual mechanisms to help rid the body of these bacteria can be through mucus that is expelled by coughing and/or sneezing, sweating helps the body cool down in case of fever, etc. and this depletes the water reserves in your body. So help yourself by drinking plenty of water, mild tea and broth or soup.
