    How to make a simple PCB (Printed Circuit Board) ?

  • 1 Getting the required materials

    The following items are needed: Copper printed circuit board, plastic saw, plastic board driller, soldering iron, solder roll, circuit design, iron scrub, heavy laundry iron, glossy paper, plastic bowl, laser printer and etching solution like ferric chloride.

  • 2 Printing the design on the paper

    The toner printer should be used to print the circuit design on the glossy paper. Care should be taken as ink printers won't work.

  • 3 Cutting the circuit out of the paper

    Leaving a margin of 2-3 mm from each side while cutting the board.

  • 4 Cutting the copper board

    The copper board should be the same size as the circuit paper to have a good finish so that the board could be easily cut with the required dimensions. If it's not applicable to cut the board, it's fine to leave the board in its original size form.

  • 5 Placing the paper on the board

    After rubbing the copper board hard with the iron scrub till it's very clean and shiny, the previously trimmed circuit design paper should be placed perfectly on the copper board with the toner printing in direct contact with the copper board.

  • 6 Ironing the paper

    The laundry iron should have the highest temperature settings, then the iron should be placed on the copper board with the paper on it and put as much horizontal force on the board as possible while slowly moving it safely for 5 minutes, then moving the tip of iron on the edges of the paper.

  • 7 Cooling the board

    The board should be cooled right away after ironing in a plastic bowl containing hot water (not boiling) in it, then leaving it for 5-8 minutes.

  • 8 Scrubbing the paper

    The paper should be scrubbed using fingers (be careful if the water is still hot) and scrub it slowly so that the paper gets removed easily after being saturated in water.

  • 9 Cleaning the board from all paper traces

    At this point, the tracks should start to appear on the board, then the board should be cleaned from all the paper traces. If it didn't appear then this probably means the paper wasn't ironed on the copper board the right way.

  • 10 Putting the board in the etching solution

    After carefully pouring the etching solution in the plastic bowl, the board should sink down the solution and be left for 20 minutes, the board should be shaken using a glass rod every 2 minutes.

  • 11 Checking the copper traces

    Copper traces must be checked as if there are any traces left then more solution should be added and left for more minutes.

  • 12 Cleaning the board

    The board should be washed with water and dried using tissue paper.

  • 13 Drilling the board

    Using the driller, the drilling spots on the circuit design have to be drilled to enter the electronic components in it.

  • 14 Soldering the electronic components

    Using the solder and soldering iron, the components could be soldered on the board, it would be easier to compare the board with the original design with the components value on the circuit design software.
