Why are cellphones harmful

  • 1 Cellphones produce harmful radiofrequency waves (RF)

RF waves are a form of electromagnetic energy that can heat up body tissues, increasing the risk of brain tumors and cancer. They are a form of non-ionizing radiation like FM radio waves and microwaves. Electromagnetic energy can cause cellular stress, damaging the cells and DNA.

  • 2 The closer the antenna to the body, the greater the exposure to RF waves

Most RF waves come from the antenna; energy can be lost quickly from the phone to the head, as the antenna is always near the head when answering the phone. A study showed that brain tissues on the same side of the head as the phone’s antenna metabolized more glucose leading to uncertain outcomes.

  • 3 The RF energy absorbed by the body usually exceeds the specific absorption rate (SAR)

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allowed up to 1.6 watts per kilogram (W/kg) of body weight as a limit of SAR to phone manufacturers. However, the user can be exposed to much more RF depending on other factors such as the amount of time of usage and the distance from cellphone towers.

  • 4 Children have a higher risk of developing brain cancer than adults

Children have thinner and smaller skulls; therefore, they have greater proportional exposure to the field of radio-frequency radiation. Their nervous system is also still developing, and thus more prone to developing cancer.

  • 5 Cellphones can increase stress levels

The higher the frequency of a cellphone, the more stress it can cause. The constant ringing, vibrations, reminders and alarms are all factors of increasing stress.

  • 6 Cellphones cause sleep disturbances, and sometimes depression

At the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, researchers found that there is a direct link between the psychosocial aspects of cell phone use and mental health symptoms in young adults. The excessive use of mobile phones can cause stress and sleep disturbance that can sometimes lead to depression.

  • 7 Cellphones can harm the immune system

A recent study conducted by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine showed that 92% of cell phones examined had bacteria on them, 82% of users' hands had bacteria and 16% of cell phones and hands had E-coli.

  • 8 Cellphones increase risk of chronic pain

Texting or holding the phone for long periods of time can cause inflammation and muscular pain in the joints, neck and back if held while the body is in an uncomfortable position as said by Healthcentral.com

  • 9 Cellphones can harm the senses

Spending long periods of time in front of the phone's screen can cause vision problems over time, as the screen is relatively small, which causes the eyes to get strained while reading. The radiation emitted can also cause damage to the inner ear.

  • 10 Cellphones emit electromagnetic radiation that can kill sperms

Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic found that men who used cellphones a lot (more than four hours a day) consistently had lower sperm quality. Being close to any electromagnetic radiation can also cause temporary sterility, such as microwave ovens (see the dangers of microwave ovens).

  • 11 Cellphone emissions can affect pregnancy

A study has shown that regular exposure to such radiations can increase the risk of having kids with behavioral problems by 50%. This is because cellphone emissions increase melatonin level in a mother (a hormone in the body) that affects her metabolism, affecting the fetus' brain development.

  • 12 Cellphones can have a negative effect on emotions

The University of Essex in the United Kingdom conducted a study showing that using cellphones can negatively affect people's emotions during face to face conversations, as it is sometimes considered disrespectful, and usually the user doesn't pay full attention to the person speaking.
