Why do we become curious

  • 1 To achieve our goals

People can become curious because they believe that something might help them achieve one or more of their important goals.

  • 2 To survive

Evolutionary psychologists suggest that curiosity helps humans discover the important things needed for survival.

  • 3 Novelty catches attention

The human brain filters repetitive patterns but gets attracted to novel and new stuff because of expecting interesting rewards from them (See also why the brain likes novel stuff).

  • 4 We don't have much information about something

When a person has little information about something that he cares about then he will usually become more curious to know more about that thing.

  • 5 We are interested in someone

When we get interested in someone we become more curious to know more about that person (See also signs someone is interested in you)

  • 6 To feel better about ourselves

Sometimes we become curious to know more about a person so that we can feel better about ourselves. Humans always compare themselves to others and by finding more information about a person they can feel better about themselves (See what makes people nosey)

  • 7 To learn more

Some people suggest that we are curious by nature and that this trait helps us learn more about our environment and better interact with it.

  • 8 The information we need to know is crucial

A person who is very sensitive can become very curious to know what a person meant by a certain remark because that piece of information will affect his mood greatly (See why are some people emotionally sensitive).

  • 9 Thrill seeking

Thrill seeking humans might be more curious than ordinary humans. Those people always try to explore their environment to find out if there is anything interesting.

  • 10 Information gap theory

According to the information gap theory we become curious when we believe there is a gap in the information we have and so we get motivated to fill it by knowledge. Example when a puzzle is presented to a person he might become curious to solve it.
